Using the umbrella term “well-being,” employees are urging employers to implement strategies that support physical, mental, and emotional health in the workplace. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the death rate among people of prime working age–that is, ages 25 to 64–has risen. The study reported more than 4.8 million (and climbing) working-age deaths occurred since the 1990s due to cardiometabolic conditions, making health consequences the primary causation. Scientists note the U.S. obesity rates have played a large role in increasing the risk for cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other conditions.
How are human resources, hiring representatives, and business leaders adjusting to these changes for employed individuals and job seekers? By implementing new healthcare strategies involving holistic health services that examine the whole person to get to the root cause of issues, creating innovative ways to support individual wellness needs in the workplace, and investing in the longevity of their employees.
In turn, these actions can foster a healthy, engaged, and productive workforce.
Natural and Holistic Health in the Workplace
Prioritizing employee wellness in the workplace has become a forefront necessity for individuals open to work, and employers are taking note. In a recent global survey of employees in a variety of industries, “77% reported they would consider leaving a company that does not focus on well-being; 83% said their wellness is as important as their salary; and 85% said they were more likely to stay in their role if their employer focused more on well-being.”
Trends are demonstrating movement towards offering personalized holistic wellness programs such as nutrition advice, fitness plans, stress management tools, therapy resources, and testing services (gut and hormone health and food sensitivities) through osteopathic providers, functional care providers and practitioners, health coaches, holistic nutritionists, and wellness professionals. Within these programs, there is a push towards the world of supplements to prevent the use of prescribed medications or removing drug prescriptions altogether.
The strong movement towards natural medicine is continuing to grow. Individuals want to feel empowered by their health; they want to have a voice in advocating for their own well-being.
What Can YOU Do as an Employer?
Kathleen Mullan Harris, Professor of Sociology at the University of North Carolina and chair of the committee that wrote the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, stated, “We’re losing more and more Americans in the prime of their lives, in their most productive years…” when addressing the increase of working age mortality rates.
To combat the well-being crisis in the workforce, instead of offering a comprehensive healthcare benefit package that solely relies on conventional medicine for physical health and wellness support, consider a holistic approach to workplace health.
Although conventional medicine upholds importance for acute emergency cases, it focuses on treating specific diseases or conditions–mainly using pharmaceuticals and other medical interventions. Functional medicine acknowledges the interconnectedness of our physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. It aims to get to the root cause of an individual’s symptoms and treat the health issue at the source through lifestyle changes, natural therapies, diet, mind-body practices, and supplementation when necessary.
Our health is multifaceted, therefore, our healthcare should be too.
As an employer, you will allow your employees to not only be proactive in their health by giving access to preventative measures, but you will be part of the evolution in shaping how our world views wellness in the workplace. You have the power to drastically improve and change the individual lives of each of your employees, level-up the health of your organization, and exponentially upscale your business in productivity and retention while decreasing healthcare spending.
